PARTNERSHIPS
Voltus and Octopus Energy US are pooling home devices and dispatch expertise to sell flexible power capacity to strained US grids

Voltus and Octopus Energy US announced a commercial partnership in February 2026 to deliver demand-side flexibility across four major US electricity markets: PJM, MISO, New York, and California.
The agreement pools smart thermostats, electric vehicles, and home batteries already installed in American homes into coordinated, dispatchable capacity. Utilities, grid operators, and data centers are the intended buyers. Voltus reported $240 million dispatched to customers in 2025. Octopus Energy US brings residential device enrollment technology and a consumer engagement platform.
Two service models underpin the deal. Flexibility-as-a-Service packages demand response into a managed product for utilities. Bring Your Own Capacity allows data centers to contribute their controllable load directly into virtual power plant networks.
"By combining our platforms and customer relationships, we can deploy VPPs at the accelerated scale and speed that is needed to meet today's load growth needs," said Dana Guernsey, chief executive of Voltus.
Enrolled households earn payments when their connected devices are optimised during peak demand periods, converting domestic appliances into grid assets.
Structural obstacles remain. Aggregating residential devices to meet wholesale market performance thresholds is technically demanding. Regulatory implementation of FERC Order 2222, which governs how distributed energy resources participate in wholesale markets, is still advancing at uneven rates across the four target regions.
AI-driven data centre load growth is straining supply in all four markets, pushing utilities to find capacity faster than new generation can be built. The Voltus-Octopus partnership positions itself as one answer: commercial dispatch expertise merged with consumer-facing technology, drawing capacity from devices already in place rather than infrastructure yet to be financed or sited.
